This is a review for the original Monsieur de Givenchy, which was in production for about a million years before being reformulated and moved to the Les Mythiques line of classic Givenchy fragrances from years gone by. Monsieur de Givenchy has not suffered much in the heart notes and the base notes. The transition from natural civet to synthetic civet has been handled with care. It has, however, lost the exalting, verbena dominant citrus opening accord that lasted well into the heart notes. Fragrantica lists the notes for MdG-V as follows: “Top: carnation, cinnamon, pepper and lemon; middle notes are lavender and lemon verbena; base notes are sandalwood, musk and oakmoss.” Basenotes has even less details, with no reference to the carnation and cinnamon, let alone the geranium and civet that I know is there.
As the top and middle notes relax, the fragrance settles into a soapy lavender and musk with warmer hints of cedar and civet. It is these basenotes that set Monsieur apart from many other scents of its time, such as Dior’s Eau Sauvage (1966), regarded by many as the best men’s fragrance of the 20th century, though I vehemently disagree.Citrus-Woody notes of bergamot, lemon, verbena and lavender, soothed with Hinoki wood and Oakmoss for a fragrance that is a true classic.Monsieur de Givenchy was launched in 1959.
